Carers’ Sanctuary is a free, quarterly, online magazine for family caregivers. It blends useful information and support with entertaining features and stories. There are numerous opportunities for you, our readers, to share your experiences and stories. Each issue will focus on a different theme, such as looking after your own health, sleep deprivation and travelling with a disability. We would love to hear from you. If you have ideas for themes, or would like to send us your stories or any other contributions; just click on the ‘Contact us’ tab on the top menu.
Hi I’m Aviva
Hi I’m Aviva Cohen. In 2006 Steve and I had two lovely little girls, we worked hard and practiced Karate every day. Then, without warning, Steve had a devastating stroke.
This event steered my life in a new direction; I became a family caregiver and started using my skills to help Steve and others in a similar position. My journey has taken me from utter despair to living with hope. After years of research I found clinically tested therapies that helped Steve to recover a good deal of his cognition and his mobility. I published my findings in a website called Research & Hope.
However, Steve never regained his ability to speak. This led me to set up an organisation called Neuro Hero to help people with communication and cognitive challenges. Within a year we won two prestigious awards, one from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland and the other from the Arthur Guinness Fund.
I published the original version of Carers’ Sanctuary in April 2011. Since then my life has taken me on a strange journey along pathways I never intended to travel. Over the years I have documented elements of our extraordinary adventure in a blog. If you would like to read more please go to NeuroHero/blog
